Victim Advocate with primary responsibilities at Emergency Shelter
Position Type: 2 Positions, Full-time, non-exempt
Description:
The Victim Advocate provides direct advocacy services to survivors of sexual assault, domestic violence, stalking, and human trafficking by providing support, assistance with resources, and options regarding safety. The Victim Advocate is a member of our advocacy team providing crisis response and survivor support. These positions will require evening and weekend work.
Specific Duties:
Provide victim-centered, trauma informed direct advocacy services to victims/survivors including court, legal, law enforcement, medical, safe shelter, child/youth and other services
Provide victims/survivors with a safe, supportive, confidential, and respectful environment
Communicate effectively with victims/survivors to understand their needs and identify appropriate resources
Work closely with other members of the BrightHouse team to ensure client needs are met
Provide Crime Victim’s Rights information to clients
Build and maintain relationships with community members, organizations, and others to increase awareness of services and referrals to BrightHouse
Provide outreach and presentations
Maintain and complete paperwork and statistical data in a timely and accurate manner
Answer Crisis Line calls reliably
Welcome new residents to shelter, and ensure their safety and security
Actively assist in the upkeep of Shelter as needed
Assist with other duties as assigned
Required Qualifications:
Some college or pertinent direct client assistance experience
Passion for BrightHouse’s mission and vision
Ability to maintain self-care while dealing with daily secondary trauma
Ability to work in a nonjudgmental way with victims/survivors, and treat all people with dignity and respect
Self-motivated with minimal supervision
Must maintain strict confidentiality
Excellent written and verbal communication, organization, and time-management skills
Must have a valid driver’s license and auto insurance
Must be comfortable driving within the 4-county area BrightHouse serves, as well as to and from Wichita
Need to be team-driven and supportive of both survivors and co-workers
Working knowledge of Microsoft Office
Must pass KBI background check
Preferred Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree in social work or related field
Prior experience with victims/survivors of domestic violence or sexual assault
Experience in conflict management
Speak conversational Spanish or other foreign language (additional pay for bilingual skills)
Compensation: $21.75 per hour; 37.5 hour fulltime work week
